College is being independent and making life choices. As an upcoming third year college student, I’ve rounded up five quotes that I think would help incoming college freshmen as well as those who are already in college. So far in my stay in DLSU, these are what I’ve learned by experience.

1.) “Confidence. If you have it, you can make anything look good”

In the world of fashion, confidence is the key to making your outfit look as if it costs a million bucks. Well, this is also applicable in school. In college, there will be a lot of presentations and if you want for it to look like you’ve really put a lot of effort into it, you need to be confident in presenting it in front of the class. By confidence, I mean, knowing all the details of your work and ready to answer any questions about it. So don’t rely on having a good visual presentation rather work on your delivery and presentation too.

2.) “It always seems impossible until it’s done”

In college, you don’t get to meet your professor in the same subject for 5 days a week but instead, you get to meet them for 2-3 days a week. Which means, you have a leeway of at least a day to do your homework or any task that has been assigned. Unlike in high school, once you get home you need to do it right away since it’s due tomorrow. Although there’s a leeway period for you, it doesn’t mean that you can cram your way to your homework. Time management is the key in college. As what Nelson Mandela said, it always seems impossible until it’s done. Some projects would look like it would take forever to do, but if you start early then you would see yourself relaxing your way through the deadline. Make sure to take note of the deadlines and set your priorities. Having to cram a paper and having zero hours of sleep would be the last thing you’d want to happen.

3.) “Do more of what makes you happy”

College gives you freedom. Freedom in time, freedom to choose and freedom to be who you want to be. Less restrictions in what you do and in college, you can be who you really want to be. In college, you have the time to harness your skills and see what you can be. Join organizations and don’t be afraid to be yourself. Organizations are there to focus on your talent or skills and take a break from the usual academic setting. This is more on experiences and making friends. Pick out an organization where you can see yourself excelling and enjoying at the same time.

4.) “Nothing worth it comes easy”

This quote has tested me a couple of times already and I can say that this is true. There will always be challenges along the way but as they say, it will always be worth it in the end. If you want something badly, like getting a high grade in your terror professor’s class, then you need to work hard for it. It’s not like you’re gonna have a high grade for doing nothing. Besides, knowing that you’ve worked hard for it just sums up everything. If you think the struggle is too much, wait until you see the end result. If it’s worth it, you gotta wait and work on it.

5.) “Define success on your own terms. Achieve it by your own rules and build a life you’re proud to live”

This quote may seem a bit too much for a college student but success for us is to graduate proud and loud. Knowing that you’ve conquered college life and that you’re ready to face the next step of life. Every single one of us has their own mindset with graduating, it may be to graduate with honors or graduate with special awards, it all depends on what we want to achieve. Remember that you can start building your life in college and whatever you can achieve in college you can definitely achieve in the future.
